License Management

This section describes how to manage ALM licenses by using Web Administration.

License Management overview

In the Licenses > License Management tab, you can view the total number of licenses in use, the maximum number of licenses that you have for each ALM project or domain, and the expiration dates for the licenses. When other Micro Focus tools, such as UFT, are connected to an ALM project, you can view the total number of licenses in use for these tools. You can also add licenses. In addition, you can view the ALM edition installed on your server.

Within the Licenses tab, there are tabs for viewing and updating licenses.

Tab Description
Status

Enables you to modify licenses and launch the licensing portal to retrieve licenses.

License Assignments

Available to ALM site Administrators only.

Enables you to assign licenses to the various domains and projects.

For details, see Assign licenses to domains and projects.

Named Licenses

Enables you to assign named licenses to specific users.

Modify licenses

In the Licenses > License Management > Status tab, you can modify licenses and launch the Micro Focus Licensing portal to retrieve licenses.

To modify licenses:

  1. In Web Administration, click the Licenses tab.

  2. Click the Status tab.

    The Status tab includes the following UI elements:

    UI Element

    Description

    Refresh. Refreshes the screen.

    Enables you to modify licenses by selecting one of the following: 

    • Upload License: Opens the Upload License dialog box, enabling you to browse for and select a license file.

    • Paste License: Opens the Paste License dialog box, enabling you to paste the license key into a text box.

    • Clear License.: Opens a confirmation dialog box that verifies whether you want to clear all the installed licenses and their assignments.

    Hides expired licenses in the table.
    Opens the Micro Focus Licensing portal in a new browser, enabling you to purchase licenses.

    Edition

    Indicates the ALM edition installed. For details, refer to the Micro Focus Application Lifecycle Management User Guide: ALM Editions.

    Model

    Indicates the license type. Possible values are:

    • CONCURRENT : A license that allows perpetual usage of the purchased licenses until the license expiration date.

    • PPU: A license that allows a month of actual usage of the purchased licenses. Used licenses expire at the end of the month in which they were used.

    License Name

    The ALM module name.

    Named

    Indicates whether the license is a named license assigned to a specific user.

    Expiration Date

    The expiration date of the license.

    In Use

    The total number of licenses in use.

    Max

    The maximum number of available licenses.

  3. Click the arrow next to Modify Licenses.

  4. Select Upload License or Paste License.

    • Select Upload License to open the Upload License dialog box, enabling you to browse for and select a license file.

    • Select Paste License to open the Paste License dialog box, enabling you to paste the license key into a text box..

      Note: You cannot paste licenses in Internet Explorer 11. You must upload the license from a file.

    • Select Clear License to open a confirmation dialog box that verifies whether you want to clear all the installed licenses and their assignments.
  5. To add licenses, click Launch Licensing Portal.

    The Micro Focus Licensing portal opens in a new browser, enabling you to purchase licenses.

Assign licenses to domains and projects

In the License Assignments tab, you can assign licenses to specific domains or projects to allow users assigned to each project to use the assigned licenses. The number of remaining, available licenses is shown towards the bottom of the tab. If a project needs more licenses than the number it is assigned, extra licenses can be taken from the domain or from the available licenses, until all available licenses are used.

To assign licenses to domains and projects:

  1. In Web Administration, click the Licenses tab.

  2. Click the License Assignments tab.

    The License Assignments tab includes the following UI elements:

    UI Element

    Description

    Refreshes the screen.

    Saves changes.
    Expands the domains and displays all project names.
    Collapses the domains and hides the project names.
    Hides the domains and projects that do not have licenses assigned to them.
    Available Number of available unassigned site-level licenses by license type.
    Site Pool Total number of available site-level licenses by license type.

  3. Locate the domain or project to which you want to assign licenses. In the cells for the type of licenses you are assigning to the domain or project, enter the number of licenses you want to assign.

    The total of available licenses is reduced accordingly.

    ALM validates that the total number of licenses assigned to the projects and domains does not exceed the number of licenses in the site pool.

  4. Click Save to save the changes.

Assign licenses to users

You can assign named licenses to specific users. The user has exclusive access to this license, but cannot use licenses from the Site Pool. The user must use this license for thirty days. After thirty days, the license assignment can be removed from the user. Also, when a named license is assigned to a user, you have one hour to remove the assignment.

Assign a license to a user

  1. In Web Administration, click the Licenses tab.

  2. Click the Named Licenses tab.

    The Named Licenses tab includes the following UI elements:

    UI Element

    Description

    Refresh. Refreshes the screen.

    Hides any expired licenses in the table.

    Enabled when you select a license from the license list.

    Opens the Add User window that allows you to assign the license to selected users.

    Removes the selected users from the Assigned Users area.
    Apply filter. Applies the filter typed in the Filter field. To return to the full list, leave the Filter field empty and click Apply filter again.

    License Name

    The ALM module name.

    Expiration Date

    The expiration date of the license.

    In Use

    The total number of licenses in use.

    Max

    The maximum number of licenses that you have for each ALM module.

    User Name

    The name of the user.

    Full Name

    The full name of the user.

    Assignment Time

    The date and time that the user was assigned to the license.

    Reassignment Time

    The date and time that the license assignment can be removed from the user. Once a license is assigned to a user, you have one hour to remove the assignment. After that time, the assignment cannot be removed from the user for thirty days. During the first hour and after thirty days, this field is valued with Redistributable.

  3. In the License Status side, select the license you want to assign, and click Add User.

  4. In the Add User window, form the All Users list, select the users you want to assigned the license to, and click .

    The users are displayed in the Assigned Users side.

  5. Click Save to save the changes.

Remove a license assignment from a user

A license assignment can only be removed from a user when the value of Reassignment Time is Redistributable.

  1. In the License Status side, select the license.

  2. In the Assigned Users side, select the user.

  3. Click Remove to remove the user. The user name is no longer displayed in the Assigned Users side.

  4. Click Save to save the changes.
