Link defects to entities

Link existing defects to an entity. This is useful, for example, when a new test is created specifically for a known defect. By creating a link, you can determine if the test should be run based on the status of the defect.

You can link defects to requirements, tests, test sets, test instances, test runs, test step/run step, and defects.

Link defects to an entity

  1. Open the target entity and click the Linked Defects tab.

  2. To link an existing defect to the entity, click Link > By ID. Enter the defect ID and click Link.

Requirements, Test Plan, Test Lab: To add a new defect and link it to the entity, click Link > Add and Link Defect

Click the defect's link to open it in the Defects tab.

View defects linked to an entity

In the Linked Defects tab, you can control how linked defects are displayed.

  • Select Include Indirect Links to display indirect links together with direct links.

  • Clear Include Indirect Links to display direct links only.

When you link a defect to an entity, a direct link is created to that entity. Indirect links are also created automatically to related higher-level entities. Only direct defect links can be deleted from an entity.

Direct linkage examples:

  • If a test is created specifically for a defect, linking the test and defect helps determine whether the test should be run based on defect status.

  • During a manual run, when a defect is added to the run, a direct link between the run and defect is created.

Indirect linkage:

  • If a defect is linked to a run, it is indirectly linked to the run's test instance, test set, and test.

  • If the corresponding test is covered by a requirement, an indirect link is also added to the requirement.
