Quick start for Linux

This topic provides a summary of the tasks for setting up Deployment Automation and its components on Linux.

Interactive server installation

The Deployment Automation interactive server installer uses a wizard that guides you through the installation process.

Note: UNIX installers are 32-bit applications, and 64-bit systems may not support them by default. Before running the installer on a 64-bit Linux system, ensure that you have Motif installed (usually available by default).

As a user with root privileges, run the following installer:

Micro FocusDA-Server.bin

The properties set during the server installation are recorded in the installed.properties file located in the server_install/conf/server/ directory.

Quick server installation

For a quick default server installation, run the installer and complete the wizard as follows.

To quickly install Deployment Automation:

  1. Step by step, complete the installer wizard:

    Setting Description
    Destination Folder Accept the default.
    General Program Settings Accept the defaults.
    Database Selection Accept the default (Derby).
    Database Details

    Specify the details for the built-in Derby database:

    • Port: 11377
    • User: <any user ID>
    • Password: <anypassword>
    • Confirm Password: <anypassword>

    Note: The installer creates the Derby database.

    Administrator Details Enter the product administrator username and password.
    Configuration Details Accept the default, 8080.
  2. On the Ready to Install page, review the settings and click Install.
  3. When the wizard is completed, review the installation details and click Finish.

Your server installation is now complete.

Start and stop the server

The installer installs Deployment Automation under the application server and starts the service automatically.

To start or stop the server service:

  1. Navigate to the <server_installation>/bin directory.

    For example: /opt/MicroFocus/da/common/tomcat/9.0/bin

  2. Run startup.sh to start the server or shutdown.sh to stop it.

Log in to Deployment Automation

After you have completed at minimum a server installation, you can log in to the user interface to start configuring Deployment Automation.

To open the Deployment Automation user interface:

  1. In a web browser, enter the following URL:


    Use the host name and port for the application server where you installed Deployment Automation. The default port for Common Tomcat is 8080.

  2. Log in to the server using the credentials (Username and Password) you set up during the server installation.

Agent installation

You must install at least one agent for a basic installation.

Multiple agents on multiple machines If you plan to run deployments on several machines, install a separate agent with a unique name on each machine. If, for example, your testing environment consists of three machines, install an agent on each one. Follow the same procedure for each environment the application uses.
Multiple agents on one machine If you plan to install multiple agents on a single machine, make sure that all names are unique: installation directory name, agent name, and service name, if running the agent as a service.

Interactive agent installation

The interactive agent installer uses a wizard to guide you through the installation process.

Start and stop an agent

The agent installer installs the agent service but does not start it. By default, the service is set to manual start.

If you are using an agent relay, make sure to start it before starting any agents that will communicate through it.

To start or stop an agent service:

  1. Navigate to the <agent_installation>/bin directory.

    For example, /opt/microfocus/Deployment Automation Agent/core/bin.

  2. Run agent {start|stop} to start or stop the agent.

After the agent has started, open Deployment Automation, navigate to Management > Resources, and select the Relays option. The agent is now displayed with a status of Connected.

Load plugins

Deployment Automation includes a set of standard plugins in the server installation.

Many additional plugins are available for you to download and use for your specific needs. You can install, or load, plugins directly in the DA user interface.

Note: You can load only the plugins that use Groovy version 3.0.0 or later. Plugins with an old Groovy version might not run on agents 6.3.3 and later.

To load a plugin:

  1. Extract the individual plugin zip file from the bundle you downloaded from the Deployment Automation support page.

  2. In Deployment Automation, navigate to Administration > Automation.
  3. On the Plugins tab, click Load Plugin.
  4. In the Load Plugin dialog box, click Choose File and select the plugin zip file you extracted earlier.
  5. Click Load.

After the load process completes successfully, the plugin is added to the list of plugins in Automation > Plugins and becomes available immediately.
