Using Jira issues in CM clients
This topic describes how to use Jira issues in Dimensions CM clients.
Add Jira as an external request provider and set it as the default, for details see Adding Jira as a request provider.
Note: Different Dimensions CM products can be mapped to different Jira external request providers. The Jira issues that are displayed in a client depend on the product that is currently open. For details, see Adding Jira as a request provider
Authenticating to Jira
The first time you use Jira issues in a Dimensions CM client you are prompted to log into Jira so that CM can use your credentials to access your Jira inbox.
In clients with a graphical user interface, a wizard guides you through the authentication steps:
- Web and desktop clients.
- Windows Explorer, Eclipse, and Visual Studio integrations.
Command line clients
In the command line clients, such as dmcli and the Git client, use a Jira URL to authenticate. dmcli also supports the
AUTH command for basic authentication. For details see Authenticating to Jira using the command line.
Git Client IDE plug-ins
To use Jira requests in the Git Client IDE plug-ins, for example IntelliJ IDEA, first log into Jira from any CM client.
Note: If your Jira credentials are invalidated, you need to re-enter them, for example:
- A connection token is revoked or expires.
- An administrator changes the configuration of a Jira integration causing credentials to be cleaned up.
Logging into Jira
Depending on how the Jira integration is configured, you can use basic and/or OAuth authentication.
- Jira Server (on-premise installation): enter a username and password.
- Jira Cloud: enter an email and the API token generated for the account in Jira.
OAuth authentication is identical to logging into Jira in a browser with an additional prompt to check that you trust CM to access Jira. Micro Focus recommends using OAuth as it is more secure than basic authentication.
Note: In the desktop and web clients you can log into Jira at any time. For example, you may want to change the authentication method, use a different API token, or use a different Jira account.
- Desktop client: from the Tools menu select Log in to Jira.
- Web client: on the Requests tab, on the toolbar click Log in to Jira.
Displaying Jira issues in the desktop client
To display Jira issues in the desktop client:
- Do one of the following:
- To display all requests for the current user, from the Views select User Inbox. In the Inbox select External Requests.
- To display the favorite requests for the current user, from the Views select User Inbox. In the Inbox select Favorite Requests.
- To display all requests for the current project, from the File menu select Open > External Requests. In the Open requests dialog box apply filters, select one or more requests, and click Open.
- To customize the columns in the views, from the Tools menu select Customize Views.
- To open a request in Jira, right-click, and select Open.
- To open a review of a Jira request in PulseUno, on the Reviews tab select a review, and click Open.
The content window on the right displays information such as related items, baselines, and reviews. For external requests you can also run operations such as merge, create topic streams, and revise baselines.
Displaying Jira issues in the web client
To display Jira issues in the web client:
- Select the Requests tab.
- In the navigation pane select Favorites, Inbox, or a request type. The request types are defined in the Jira project.
- To filter the requests that are displayed in the content pane, create a new filter. For example, only display requests with a particular status or owned by certain user.
- To open a request and view its attributes, relationships, and refactoring history, select it, and on the toolbar click Open.
- To open a request in Jira, select it, and click Open in External Tool on the toolbar.
- You can run operations on requests such as merge, create topic streams, and create baselines.
- To customize the columns:
- Click the user name to the right of the toolbar. The Set User Preferences dialog box opens.
- From Select an area to customize select Columns for the External Requests table.
- Add and remove columns and click OK.
Displaying Jira issues in the Visual Studio IDE
To display Jira issues in the Dimensions CM for Microsoft Visual Studio IDE:
- From the View menu select Dimensions Explorer.
- In Dimensions Explorer click Connect and log into a Dimensions CM repository or add a new connection.
- In Dimensions Explorer click Requests.
- In the Requests panel click Log in to Jira.
- Follow the instructions in the Jira login wizard.
- After you login, the Requests panel in Dimensions Explorer displays the issues assigned to you from all the projects in the current Jira request provider. If your issues are not displayed, click Refresh.
- To filter the list of requests, click Filter and select or deselect categories.
- To open a request in Jira, select it, and click Open selected request.
Displaying Jira issues in the Eclipse IDE
To display Jira issues in the Dimensions CM for Eclipse IDE:
- From the Dimensions menu select Dimensions Explorer.
- Log into a Dimensions CM repository or add a new connection.
- In Dimensions Explorer double-click Requests. The External Requests view opens.
- In External Requests click Log in to Jira.
- Follow the instructions in the Jira login wizard.
- After you login, the External Requests view displays the issues assigned to you from all the projects in the current Jira request provider. If your issues are not displayed, click Refresh.
- To display issues from a different Jira provider, in the External Requests view click Select Requests Provider and select a provider.
- To filter the list of requests, click Filter, and select or deselect categories.
- To open a request in Jira, select it, and click Open Request.
