Promote and demote using Deployment Automation

Use the Dimensions CM web client or desktop client to promote and demote baselines with Deployment Automation.

Overview

When you promote a baseline using Deployment Automation:

You select the application process that will run component processes, and the component version the baseline items will be deployed to.
The baseline items are automatically deployed into the component version, which is automatically created during the promotion and named after the baseline specification.
The application process uses the component version to perform an automation task, for example, to deploy baseline items to the DA environment that is mapped to the GSL stage you promoted to.

When you demote a baseline using Deployment Automation:

The baseline is automatically demoted. The application process runs with the earlier component version (earlier baseline) in the environment you are demoting from.
You can demote without specifying an application process if the environment you are demoting from does not require a rollback to previous state.
You can select a rollback process, which is specifically designed for demotion, to restore the environment you are demoting from or pick any other version of any component.

To promote baselines in the Dimensions CM web client or desktop client, you need the following privileges:

BASELINE_PROMOTE_NEXTSTAGE	Promote a baseline to the next stage in the GSL.
BASELINE_PROMOTE_ANYSTAGE	Promote a baseline to any stage in the GSL.

To promote a baseline:

Open your Dimensions CM client:

Web client	In the My Current Project tab or Baselines tab, select a baseline and click Promote.
Desktop client	In a content window, select a baseline, right-click and select Promote.

The Promote wizard opens.

Select the next stage in the GSL to which you want to promote the baselines. Stages in the GSL are mapped to DA environments.

Specify deployment options:

Deploy items to the component version	Select a component version to which the baseline items will be deployed. If the application process uses multiple components, select an option: Select a component version for each component. Accept <None> to not use corresponding components in the automation.

To demote baselines in the Dimensions CM web client or desktop client, you need the following privileges:

BASELINE_DEMOTE_ANYSTAGE	Demote a baseline to any stage in the GSL.

To demote a baseline:

Desktop client	In a content window, select a baseline, right-click and select Demote.

Select the stage in the GSL to which you want to demote the baselines.
Select the application process that will run an automatic demotion.

For Deploy items to the component version, select a component version the baseline items will be deployed to. If the application process uses multiple components, select an option:
- Select a component version for each component.
- Accept <None> to not use corresponding components in the automation.
Click Finish.
