Roles and privileges
Dimensions CM uses roles and privileges to determine which functions different users or groups can perform.
For details about adding user accounts and assigning roles and privileges, see the Administration Console online help.
Users and groups
Users are registered in Dimensions CM with a username and password.
Various privileges and roles can then be assigned to these individual users. You can also set up groups of users, and control access and privileges by assigning them to a group.
Differences between roles and privileges
Dimensions CM provides the following mechanisms for determining which functions different users can perform:
You can create roles or use one of the Dimensions CM predefined roles, and assign that role to one or more users.
Determine a particular operation that can be performed on an object class, or an administrative function.
You can make privileges available to users or groups according to certain privilege rules.
Basic differences between privileges and roles:
Roles are assigned at product or design part level, which means you can assign roles to different users for different functional areas of your product. Roles control the ability to action objects through lifecycle transitions, enabling different users to be responsible for different approval stages in the lifecycle.
Privileges define specific operations that a user can perform. They can be assigned to all or specific users or groups, or applied to a user based on certain rules. Privileges can also be assigned to a role. You cannot restrict them to particular design parts. Privileges generally apply to all objects in a particular class.
