Create and manage tests

Create a test folder
Test folders are used for storing your LoadRunner Enterprise tests and scripts.

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).

In the test management tree, select any folder node (other than the "Unattached" folder), and click
New Folder.

Enter a name for the test folder.
Note: A folder name cannot include the following characters: \ ^ *
Manage test folder assets
You can view and manage all tests and scripts in a test folder, and get run details for all tests in the selected test folder.

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).

In the test management tree, select a test folder.
All the scripts and tests in the folder are displayed in the Tests and Scripts pane.

Click the Tests and Scripts tab to get details on a test or script.
Action
How to
Preview a test or script -
Select a test or script in the Subject area.
-
Details are displayed in the preview pane on the right. This includes the creation and last modified date, the protocol used for a script, the workload type and the total number of Vusers and groups in a test.

Click the test ID link to open the test page, where you can view and/or edit the test. For details, see View test details.

Click the script ID link to open the script page, where you can view and/or edit the script. For details, see View script details.
Add test assets Click
New Test, and add a new test. For details, see Create a test.
Copy or move test assets Right-click the asset you want to copy or move, and select Copy/Paste or Cut/Paste.
Delete test assets Select the assets you want to delete, and click
Delete. For details, see Delete a test or test folder.
Upload script Click
Upload Scripts, and then continue from step 2 of Upload and edit scripts.
Open test Designer window -
Select a test in the Tests area.

Click the ID link.
-
The test opens in the Performance Test Designer window. For details, see Performance Test Designer.
Sort or filter test assets For details, see Personalize your display.

Click the Runs tab to display run details for all tests in the selected test folder. For details, see Manage test runs and results.
Upload and edit scripts
You can upload and edit the scripts you want to use in your LoadRunner Enterprise tests.
For details, see Upload a script to LoadRunner Enterprise and Edit a script.
Create a test
You can create a new test from the Test Management tree or from the Create New Performance Test dialog box.
Create a test from the Test Management tree

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).

In the test management tree, select a folder in which you want to create a test or create a new folder, and click
New Test.

In the Create New Performance Test dialog box, define the test:
Test Name Enter a name for the performance test.
Note: It must be a unique name that is not used by another test or script in the same test folder.
Assign Test Set Select an existing test set to which to assign the test, or click Edit Test Sets, and create a new test set in the Manage Test Set dialog box. For details, see Create, edit, or assign a test set.
Workload/Schedule types Select a type of workload for the performance test. The type of workload you choose determines the type of schedule by which the test will run, and how the Vusers will be distributed at runtime.

Click OK. The test opens the Performance Test Designer window. For details, see Performance Test Designer.

Create a test from the Create New Performance Test dialog box

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Create New Test.

In the Create New Performance Test dialog box, define the test:
Test Name Enter a name for the performance test. Test Folder Select a folder in which to create the test. For details on creating a folder, see create a new folder. Assign Test Set Select an existing test set to which to assign the test, or click Edit Test Sets, and create a new test set in the Manage Test Set dialog box. For details, see Create, edit, or assign a test set.
Workload/Schedule types Select a type of workload for the performance test. For details of workload types, see Vuser distribution methods.

Click OK. The test opens the Performance Test Designer window.

Create, edit, or assign a test set
You must assign a test to a test set before you can run the test. A test can be assigned to more than one test set.
Create a test set

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).

Select an existing test, or create a new test.
-
Define a test set.
-
In the Create New Performance Test dialog box, click the Assign Test Set drop-down arrow, and select Edit Test Sets.

In the Manage Test Sets dialog box, click
, and specify a name for the Test Set folder.

Select the test set folder you created, and click
New Test Set.
-
Enter the test set name, and then click Assign.
-

Select a type of workload for the performance test. For details of workload types, see Vuser distribution methods.
You can edit a test set.

Select the test to which the test set is assigned (LoadRunner Enterprise > Test Management). Select the Test Details tab, and click the Assigned Test Set drop-down arrow.

Click Edit to open the Assign and Select Test Set dialog box from where you can perform the following actions:

Add a test set Click
Assign Test Set to create a new test set in the Manage Test Set dialog box, and then assign it to the test.
Delete a test set Click
Remove from Test Set to remove the attached test set from the test.
Assign or change an assigned test set
You can assign a test set as follows:

For a new test: In the Create new performance test dialog box, select the test set you want to assign to the test and click OK.
-
For an existing test: Select a test from the test management tree (LoadRunner Enterprise > Test Management), and in the Test Details tab, click the Assigned Test Set drop-down arrow. Select the test set you want to assign to the test and click OK.
View or edit tests and test runs
To view or edit LoadRunner Enterprise tests:

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).

Click a performance test
in the test management tree. You can search or filter the tree for specific tests or test folders:
Action How to Search for tests or test folders Click
to search for tests or test folders by name. Type the name (or part of the name) in the search box. LoadRunner Enterprise displays all tests and/or folders that contain the search string.
Filter the tree for tests Click
Test to display LoadRunner Enterprise tests only. For test details, see Edit or run a test from the Testing page.
Click
All to display LoadRunner Enterprise tests and scripts.

Edit or run a test from the Testing page.
Action How to View test details Click the Test Details tab to display details about the test.
This includes:

Test Summary area. Provides an overview of the test. For details, see View test summary.
-
Last Run. Details from the last time the test was run.
-
Failed Transactions. You can view failed transactions in the Test Runs page, and perform quick trending analysis by drilling down and investigating specific transactions related to the run. For details, see Perform quick trending analysis on test runs.

Test Runs Trend. Displays a trend graph which monitors the test runs of the selected test over time. For details, see View trend graph below.
- Description. A description of the test. Click
to add or modify the test description, and then click
.
View trend graph Enables you to monitor the test runs of a selected test over time.
To filter the information displayed in the trend graph:
-
Click the From and To
calendar icon and select the desired trended time frame for the graph.
-
Select the Scaling option to automatically scale the measurements by calculating the best ratio for displaying the graph. The scaling factor is specified next to each measurement.

Select the desired measurement types you want to view:
Average Hits Per Second. Measures the average number of hits per second within the trended time range.
Average Throughput Per Second. The amount of throughput per second within the trended time range.
Total Passed Transactions. The total number of passed transactions run within the trended time range.
Total Failed Transactions. The total number of failed transactions run within the trended time range.
% Failed of Total Transactions. The number of failed transactions out of the total number of transactions.
Total Errors. The total number of errors within the trended time range.
Maximum Vusers. The maximum number of running Vusers during a test run within the trended time range.
Duration in Minutes. The duration of a test run in minutes within the trended time range.
Add the test to a test set In the Test Summary area, click the Assigned Test Set drop-down arrow to assign a test set to the test, or to edit an existing test set. For details, see Assign or change an assigned test set. View or edit the test in XML mode Click the Coded Test tab to view the test data in XML format. For details, see View or edit a test in XML mode (Coded Test).
View test run details Click the Runs tab to manage results and related actions for test runs. For details, see View test run details.
View test assets Click the Relations tab to display all assets (monitors and scripts) associated with the currently selected test. For details, see Related Monitors Pane.
Manage test attachments Click the Attachments tab to view or add attachments that provide additional information about the test. You can attach a file or URL.

Add Attachment. Enables adding a file attachment to a LoadRunner Enterprise test or script. Attachments can be up to 10 MB per file, and the following file formats are supported: .css, .csv, .doc, .docx, .ehtml, .htm, .html, .ics, .js, .msj, .pdf, .sh, .shtml, .shtm, .txt, .text, .xbl, .xls, .xlsx, .xml, .xsl, and .xslt.
To add a description to the attachment, click the Description field in the Attachments grid and enter a description.
Tip: To add an email as an attachment, save the email on your desktop and then use the Open dialog box to add it.

Add URL. Enables adding a URL to a LoadRunner Enterprise test or script. You can attach any valid URL scheme such as HTTP, FTP, Gopher, News, Mailto, or File.
View test changes Click the Audit tab to display a list of changes made to the currently selected test. For details, see View changes made to a test run.
Note: Administrators can display a list of changes made to other entity types, such as projects, users, hosts, and roles from LoadRunner Enterprise Administration. For details, see Audit entities and user connections.
Edit test Click Edit Test to open the Performance Test Designer window where you design performance tests. For details, see Performance Test Designer.

View or edit a test in XML mode (Coded Test)
Note: This feature is provided as a tech preview version.
The Coded Test feature enables you to view and modify tests in XML format, making it easier to make changes directly to your tests.
To open a test in XML format:
-
In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).
-
Select a test in the test management tree. The Test Details pane is displayed for the selected test.

Click the Coded Test tab. The selected test is displayed in XML format.
To edit a test:
-
Make changes directly in the XML file as required.
-
You can use the auto-complete feature to select parameters.
-
Use the context menu to cut, copy, or change all occurrences functionality. You can also open the Command Palette which holds frequently used functionality, such as sorting, changing the syntax and changing the indentation settings.
Note: If you plan to change settings relating to test options in a test, we recommend making these changes in the Test Options dialog box and not in the Coded Test tab. For details, see Configure test options.

To view your changes, click Compare to Original. The XML comparison tool compares the two XML files side-by-side, and highlights the differences between them.

After making changes, click Save Test. A panel opens in the lower part of the screen displaying the validation XML.
Run a test
To run a LoadRunner Enterprise test:
-
In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).
-
Select a test in the test management tree. The Test Details pane is displayed for the selected test.

Click Run Test in the upper-right side of the pane.
-
If the selected test is assigned to a single test set, the Run Test dialog box opens.
-
If the selected test is assigned to more than one test set, or if the selected test is not assigned to a test set, the Assign and Select Test Set dialog box opens. Select a test set and click Run. The Run Test dialog box opens.

In the Run Test dialog box, create a timeslot reservation, or run the test in a reserved timeslot.
Create a timeslot reservation:
-
Open the New Timeslot tab to create a new timeslot. If the current resources are insufficient for the selected test, you will be unable to reserve a timeslot to run the test.

Configure the following timeslot settings:
UI Element
Description
Duration The amount of time, in hours and minutes, that you need the resources reserved.
Requested Resources The resources being requested for this test. VUDs Requests VUDs Vusers for the test rather than regular Vusers. For details about VUDs, see License types.
Post Run Action The action to be taken when the test run is complete.
If the system administrator has set the post run action, the selected action will be set as the only option for all tests across the project, and you will not be able to change the setting.
If the system administrator has not set the post run action, select one of the following the actions:
-
Do Nothing. Frees the machines immediately after the performance test ends. When the run has finished, the run results are left on the load generators. You can analyze the results at a later stage from the Results.
Note: This option is not available when the collate at runtime option is selected in Test Options. For details, see Configure general test options.

Collate Results. When the run has finished, the run results are collected from all the load generators. This is recommended because collation of results takes only a few minutes, and can prevent loss of or inaccessibility to results in case any of your load generators becomes unavailable. For details, see Collate run data.

Collate and Analyze Results. When the run has finished, the run results are collected and analyzed. Data analysis requires some time, depending on the size of the results file. If there is no timeslot available to include the data analysis, select the Collate results option instead, and run late Analysis when a data processor becomes available. You run late Analysis from the Results tab. For details, see Manage test results.
Note: This feature controls the action performed immediately after the run ends. It does not prevent collating or analyzing results from the Test Runs page at a later time.
Calculate Availability Calculates the availability of the resources required for running the test and checks whether a new timeslot can be created.
Availability results Displays the results of the availability verification. If your timeslot cannot be reserved, the reason will be displayed.
Run Uses the hosts reserved by the selected timeslot and runs the test. The Performance Test Run page opens. For details, see View running tests in the online screen.

Run a test in a reserved timeslot:
Select the Reserved tab to run a test in a reserved manual timeslot that has been assigned to your test, or in a timeslot that has not been assigned to any test. If there are no timeslots available, you will be unable to schedule your test.
The Reserved tab displays the following:

Delete a test or test folder
To delete a LoadRunner Enterprise test or test folder:

In LoadRunner Enterprise, click Open the navigation toolbar
and select Test Management (under Testing).
-
Select a test or folder from the test management tree, and click
Delete.
-
When deleting a folder, the selected folder is deleted and all related tests are moved to the Unattached folder. You cannot delete the root Subject folder.
-
When deleting a test, the selected test is deleted permanently. In addition, all test runs associated with the deleted test are deleted from the project and removed from any associated test sets.
Note: Deleting a performance test that is linked to a timeslot will affect the timeslot.
