Export and import data

You can export items, data, and test steps to Excel. After creating an Excel file, you can import the file to another workspace.

Export and import items

The following describes how to export and import items from and to ALM Octane.

To export items:

  1. In the relevant ALM Octane module, create filters to display the relevant items. For details on filtering, see Filter.

  2. In the toolbar, click the Export to Excel button.

If the grid is grouped or sorted, the grouped-by field is placed first in the worksheet, followed by the sorted-by field. The rest of the fields are listed in the order in which they are displayed in the grid.

To import items:

  1. Expand Settings and select Import > Backlog Items.
  2. Click Browse and navigate to the folder with the Excel file.
  3. Click Import. ALM Octane performs a validation to check correct formatting of the Excel file and that you have not imported the same file before.

ALM Octane does not support updating Backlog items via import. You can import each Excel file only once.

When ALM Octane finishes the validation:

    If there are errors

ALM Octane displays a report of the validation with the sheet and line of the error.

At the bottom of the error report, click the Export to Excel link to save the error report.

Fix the errors and try the import again.

If there are no errors The import begins.

Import tests, test steps, and test suites

When ALM Octane finishes the validation:

    If there are errors

At the bottom of the error report, click the Export to Excel link to save the error report.

Fix the errors and try the import again.

    If there are duplications

ALM Octane warns you if you already have an item with the same name as an item you are importing. (For example, this may occur if there were network problems while importing.)

You can either cancel the import and rename the duplicate items in Excel before importing, or import anyway, creating two items with the same name in ALM Octane.

If there are no errors The import begins.
  4. After the import is complete, the items are displayed in the ALM Octane Backlog module or Quality module.
