Managing Exceptions
Use the Exception Notification tab on the Edit Step to specify the recipients for notification messages to be sent if:
- The current step does not reach completion as expected (for example, if a timed step is not finished within the specified duration).
- No one accepts responsibility for an item at a particular step.
The exception messages are generated by the StarTeam Notification Agent based on the above and on system errors. These messages vary according to the exception that occurred, and cannot be modified.
The StarTeam Notification Agent sends one message to all the users in the exception notification list simultaneously.
To create an exception notification list:
- Double-click an existing step. The Edit Step dialog box opens.
- Click the Exception Notification tab.

Add any number of individual users, user groups, and references to the Exception Notification List. Specifying a reference adds to the list one or more user ID fields. The user whose ID appears in the referenced field at the time an item enters this step will be added to the list. These users and groups are from the server configuration.
To add all users simultaneously - Click the All Users button to add all users to the list.
- Click OK to confirm this decision because it will empty any current entries in the list.
- The word Everyone appears in the list. There is no need to add individual users, groups, or references.
To add one or more users - Click the Add Users button next to the list to add users to the list.
- On the Select Notified Users dialog box, select one or more users.
- Click OK. The selected users appear in the list.
To add one or more user groups - Click the Add Groups button to add groups to the list.
- On the Select Notified Groups dialog box, select one or more groups.

Click OK. The selected groups appear in the list.
To add one or more users by reference - Click the Add References button to add users to the list.
- On the Select Referenced Fields dialog box, select one or more user ID fields.
- Click OK. The referenced user ID fields appear in the list.
- Click OK.
