Planning a Workflow

Before you create a workflow, you should have a plan for the entire workflow. Before you modify a workflow, you should have a clear understanding of what your modification needs to do and how it will fit with what is currently in the workflow.

Walk through the workflow by creating a paper “map”, noting any conditions that might change the direction of the item through the workflow and any time constraints that must be applied to items as they progress throughout the workflow.

The steps and links represent the paths that an item can take through the workflow. Both have limitations.

The next few sections cover those limitations and define the terms you need to understand as you create workflows.
