Create unique test object descriptions
Relevant for: GUI tests and components
Use this topic to create unique test object descriptions either for an entire test object class or for a specific object.
Configure unique test object descriptions for a test object class
If the description used for a certain object class is not sufficient to create unique test object descriptions, update the object learning and identification settings for that class. Change the properties learned during recording and/or define a Smart Identification configuration. This helps ensure that objects can be uniquely identified even when the number of similar objects changes between test creation and run time.
For details on changing the properties learned during recording, see Object Identification Dialog Box.
For details on configuring Smart description properties, see Smart identification.
Note: Changing the way objects are learned does not affect the properties of objects already saved in the object repository. You still need to manually modify the object properties in the Object Repository or perform an update run operation to update them automatically.
Create a unique test object description for an object
View the current test object description for your object and try to find the other object(s) that have the same values for the properties in the test object description.
-
If you can find one or more description properties that can differentiate the similar objects, modify the properties that are used to identify your object, so that it can be uniquely identified during the run session.
For details, see Add Properties Dialog Box.
- Define a Visual Relation Identifier to help differentiate between two similar objects based on other objects that are always near the object that must be identified. For details, see Visual relation identifiers.
-
If there are two or more objects in your application with completely identical properties (such as two identical images on either side of a title in a Web page) and you cannot define a reliable visual relation identifier, add an ordinal identifier (index or location) to the test object description in the Object Properties or Object Repository window. For details on ordinal identifiers, see Ordinal identifiers.
