Add item or request templates

In the Administration Console, you can add templates and template revisions, import and export template files, and set a default template for an item or request type.

To work with templates, you need the Manage Object Types privilege.

Note: This functionality is available for items and Dimensions CM requests only.

Add an item or request template

In the Object Types section of the Administration Console, you can add a template for an item or request type, or add a new revision of an existing template.

To create a template:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Configuration Object Management > Object type definitions.

  2. In the Object Types navigation pane, select the item or request type for which you're creating the template.

  3. In the content pane, select the Templates tab.

  4. In the Templates section, click the New template button.

  5. In the New Template dialog box, specify the template details:

    Field Description
    Name Enter a name for the template, up to 25 characters long.
    Revision Enter the revision number of the template, up to 10 digits long.
    Filename

    Specify the path to the item header substitution file or request browse template file. Click the browse button and navigate to the file.

    The contents of this file are stored in Dimensions CM against the template and revision specified.

    Default Template? Set this template as the default for the item or request type.
  6. Click OK.

Delete item or request templates

You can remove templates and template revisions assigned to an item or request type.

You cannot delete a default template. First, change the default template, and then you can delete your template.

To delete item or request templates:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Configuration Object Management > Object type definitions.

  2. In the Object Types navigation pane, select the item or request type for which you're creating the template.

  3. In the content pane, select the Templates tab.

  4. In the Templates section, select one or more templates, click the Delete template button, and confirm.

Set a default template

When you create a template or template revision, you have the option of setting it as the default. You can later choose another item or request template as the default.

To select a default template:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Configuration Object Management > Object type definitions.

  2. In the Object Types navigation pane, select the item or request type for which you're creating the template.

  3. In the content pane, select the Templates tab.

  4. In the Templates section, select the relevant template, click the Set as default button, and confirm.

Import a template file

Importing a template file enables you to update the template without changing the template's name or revision number in Dimensions CM.

To import a template file:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Configuration Object Management > Object type definitions.

  2. In the Object Types navigation pane, select the item or request type for which you're creating the template.

  3. In the content pane, select the Templates tab.

  4. In the Templates section, select the template revision for which you want to import a template file, and click the Import Template button.

  5. In the Import Template dialog box, enter the path to the file you want to import. Or click the browse button and navigate to the file.

  6. Click OK.

Export a template file

To copy an item or request template file to your work area, use the export option.

To export a template file:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Configuration Object Management > Object type definitions.

  2. In the Object Types navigation pane, select the item or request type for which you're creating the template.

  3. In the content pane, select the Templates tab.

  4. In the Templates section, select the relevant template revision, and click the Export Template button.

    The file is automatically downloaded to your machine.
