Manage design parts

In the Administrating Console, you can modify, suspend, and remove design parts.

Modify design parts

When editing a design part, you can change a design part's name, description, or attribute values.

PRIVILEGES: Update Design Part, Rename Design Part.

To edit a design part:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Product Administration > Design part structure.

  2. In the content pane, select the design part to edit.

  3. In the content pane, click the Edit Design Part button.

  4. In the Edit Design Part dialog box, change the following details, as needed:

    Field Description

    Design Part ID

    Modify the design part name, up to 25 characters long.

    A part ID cannot contain a colon (:) or semicolon (;) character.

    Description Modify the description of the design part, up to 240 characters long.
  5. Select the Attributes tab to change the values of user-defined attributes.

  6. Click OK.

Update the PCS

You can change the part change status (PCS) for a selected design part. The PCS represents the version number of the design part.

Note: Updating a PCS is not a commonly performed operation. Typically, you update PCS when you want to work on a new version of a design part.

PRIVILEGES: Update Design Part.

To update the part change status:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Product Administration > Design part structure.

  2. In the navigation pane, select a design part.

  3. In the Design Part Details section of the content pane, click the Update PCS button.

  4. In the Update PCS dialog box, enter the new PCS value.

  5. (Optional) You can also update the design part description. Leave empty to keep the existing description.

  6. Click Yes to update the PCS.

Move design parts

You can move a design part to another location, and place it under another parent in the design structure. When you move a design part, its child design parts are also moved.

When you move a design part, a breakdown relationship is created between the design part and its new parent.

PRIVILEGES: Relate Design Part to Design Part.

Limitations for moving a design part:

  • The design part you are moving and its new parent design part must not be suspended.

  • You cannot move a design part to another product.

  • The design part you are moving must not have any open requests related to it.

To move a design part:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Product Administration > Design part structure.

  2. In the content pane, select a design part.

  3. On the toolbar, click Move.

  4. In the Move Design Part dialog box, select the parent design part under which you want to move your design part.

  5. Click Yes.

Suspend design parts

You can suspend design parts from the design structure if they are no longer used or required.

When you suspend a design part, you can still view it in the design structure but cannot work with it.

PRIVILEGES: Suspend Design Part.

To suspend a design part:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Product Administration > Design part structure.

  2. In the content pane, select a design part.

  3. On the toolbar, click Suspend.

  4. Click Yes to confirm that you want to suspend the design part.

Delete design parts

You can remove a design part from the design structure, for example, if the design part has been created in error or has never been used.

PRIVILEGES: Delete Design Part.

You cannot delete a design part in the following cases:

  • If it's a product's top-level design part or variant.

  • If a design part is referenced by any requests.

  • If a design part has children design parts.

  • If a design part owns any items.

  • If a design part exist in a baseline.

To delete a design part:

  1. In the Administration Console, go to Product Administration > Design part structure.

  2. In the content pane, select a design part.

  3. On the toolbar, click Delete.

  4. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the design part.
