Create design parts

Create design parts to add a new logical elements to the design part structure. You can create a variant design part that has the same logical structure as the source design part.

Create a design part

To create a design part, you need the Create Design Part privilege.

To create a design part:

  1. In the desktop client, go toFile > New > Design Part. The New Design Part dialog box opens.

  2. On the General tab, verify that the Parent Design Part Specification  is correct, or browse to find a different design part.

  3. From the Category  list, select a category. Categories are created in the Administration Console.

    Caution: Avoid choosing the Product category, as it is reserved for the product's top-level design part. Dimensions CM issues an error message if you try to create a part with the Product category.

  4. For New Part ID, enter a name for the design part. Use up to 25 characters. Dimensions CM automatically converts all letters to uppercase.

    Note: The design part ID cannot contain colons (:) or semicolons (;).

  5. For Variant, enter a new variant. Use up to 128 characters. The default variant is “A”.

  6. For PCS, enter the part change status. Use up to 3 characters. The default PCS is 1.

  7. For Description, enter a description of the design part. Use up to 240 characters.

  8. Select the Attributes tab, and complete any required fields.

  9. Click Create.

Create a variant design part

A variant design part has the same logical structure as the source design part.

To create a variant design part, you need the Create Design Part privilege.

To create a variant design part:

  1. In the desktop client, in the My Current Project/Stream pane, click Parts and Items. The Select Product and Design Part to Open dialog box opens.

  2. Select the product and the design part and click Open.

  3. In the Design Parts tree, select a design part.

  4. Select Part > New Variant. The New Design Part Variant dialog box opens.

  5. On the General tab, for New Variant, enter a name for the variant design part. Use up to 128 characters. This name differentiates the variant specification from the source specification.

    The variant only changes the variant portion of the part specification:

    productID:partID.variant;pcs

    The product ID, part ID, and PCS are inherited from the source design part.

  6. (Optional) For Description, enter a description of the design part. Use up to 240 characters.

  7. Select the Attributes tab, and complete any required fields.

  8. Click Create.
