Relate and unrelate objects

Relate objects to show a connection between them. You can relate an object to multiple objects. For example, a request may be related to several item revisions. Unrelating objects removes the connection.

Limitations

  • You may not be able to relate items and requests in certain lifecycle phases if the Change Management (CM) rules have been set to prevent this. For details about the CM rules, see Set up the process model.

  • If a request has been deployed to a particular stage, you cannot relate additional item revisions in response to the request if they are at an earlier deployment stage.

  • You cannot relate requests in one product to items in another product.

Relate objects

Create a connection between objects by relating them.

To relate objects to a selected object:

  1. In the web client's content pane, select the object you want to relate.

  2. On the toolbar, click Relate , and select the object class to relate to the selected object. The available relationships depend on the object type and your process model.

  3. In the Relate dialog box, specify the following details:

    Field Description
    Relationship type

    If available, select a relationship type.

    The available relationships depend on the object type and the process model.

    Relate to

    Enter the specifications of the objects to which you're relating the current object. For details, see Object specification.

    Enclose each specification in quotation marks (""), and separate specifications with commas (,).

    Or click the browse button and use the Selection wizard to select objects.

    Current object is If you're relating objects of the same class, verify the direction of the relationship, Parent or Child.
    Relative path

    Projects or baselines: Enter the path to use for item files from the project or baseline you are relating to. The path is relative to the project root folder of the current project.

    If you're relating objects of the same class, the current object must be the parent.

  4. Click OK.

Unrelate objects

Unrelate objects to remove a connection between them.

To unrelate objects from a selected object:

  1. In the web client's content pane, click the name of the object from which you want to unrelate objects.

  2. In the dialog box that opens, select the Relationships tab.

  3. From the Related Objects Class list, select the type of object to unrelate.

  4. (Optional) Use the Filter field to narrow down the list of displayed objects.

  5. In the Children and/or Parents lists, select the required objects, and click the Unrelate button.

  6. Click OK.
