Promote objects
Use the Promote operation to move objects from their current stage to another stage higher up the Global Stage Lifecycle (GSL).
Note: This functionality is not available for external requests.
Overview
Promoting moves objects upwards through the Global Stage Lifecycle (GSL).
Tip: You can set up email notifications to alert users when a promotion occurs.
Promote rules:
-
You must have a privilege on the stage to which you are promoting.
-
Item revisions and Dimensions CM requests in an off-normal lifecycle state cannot be promoted.
-
If an associated deployment area for the project or stream has the Deploy by Default option set, the deployment occurs automatically upon promotion, and you don't need the Deploy privilege. If there are other deployment areas associated with the project or stream, you can also deploy to those areas if you have the necessary privilege.
-
You can promote through more than one stage in the GSL in the same operation.
-
Promotion can also take place when actioning items, Dimensions CM requests, or baselines if the next lifecycle state has been associated with a deployment stage in the GSL. If there are any default areas associated with the project/stream for that stage, the item files are also automatically deployed to those areas.
-
If you have the appropriate privileges on the source and target stages, you can bypass the promotion to all the intermediate stages. For example, you might promote from DEV straight to PRE-PROD, bypassing the SIT and QA intermediate stages.
Note: Items are promoted to all intermediate stages so that they can be deployed manually to areas defined for those stages at a later time.
Promote items
Promote item revisions to move them to a higher stage in the Global Stage Lifecycle, and optionally, have the item files deployed to the associated areas.
To promote item revisions, you need the following privileges:

ITEM_PROMOTE_ANYSTAGE | Promote an item to any stage in the GSL. |
ITEM_DEPLOY | Deploy promoted items to a non-default area (the privilege for the area to which you want to deploy). |
To promote item revisions:
-
Open the Promote wizard in your Dimensions CM client:
Web client In the My Current Project view or Items view, select one or more Dimensions CM item revisions. Then click Promote on the toolbar. Desktop client In an Items list, select one or more items. Then select Item > Promote in the menu bar. -

Promote Dimensions CM requests
Promote Dimensions CM requests to move their related item revisions to a higher stage in the Global Stage Lifecycle, and optionally, have the related item files deployed to the associated areas. Promoting a request promotes item revisions related as In Response To the request, and optionally, any child requests.
This method of promotion enables you to group the item revisions that belong to a particular change and promote those items together.
Any refactoring changes related to the request are also deployed.
To promote requests, you need the following privileges:
REQUEST_PROMOTE_NEXTSTAGE | Promote a request to the next stage in the GSL. |
REQUEST_PROMOTE_ANYSTAGE | Promote a request to any stage in the GSL. |
REQUEST_DEPLOY | Deploy promoted requests to a non-default area (the privilege for the area to which you want to deploy). |
To promote requests:
-
Open the Promote wizard in your Dimensions CM client:
Web client In the My Current Project view or Requests view, select one or more Dimensions CM requests. Then click Promote on the toolbar. Desktop client Select one or more Dimensions CM requests. Then select Request > Promote in the menu bar. -
