Applications Pane (Business Component Settings Dialog Box / Application Area - Additional Settings Pane)

Relevant for: GUI components only

Application Areas: This pane enables you to specify the Windows-based applications on which the components associated with the application area can record and run. It also displays the environments on which the component can currently record (based on the currently loaded add-ins).

Business Components: When viewing this pane from the Business Component Settings dialog box, the options are read-only.

To access

Do one of the following:

  • For a business component: With a component in focus, select File > Settings > Applications node.
  • For an application area: Open the application area and select Additional Settings > Applications in the sidebar.

Important information
  • You can use the Applications pane to set or modify your application preferences in the following scenarios:

    • You have already recorded one or more steps in an associated component and you want to modify the settings before you continue recording.
    • You want to record and run the component on a different application than the one you previously used.
  • You can record component steps only on the specified applications.
  • If you are recording a new component, set your application settings in the Applications pane of the Application Area Additional Settings using the Applications dialog box. This dialog box opens when you start to record, and contains the same options as the Applications pane, described in this section.
  • The Applications dialog box and Applications pane may also contain options applicable to any UFT One add-ins installed on your computer. For details regarding these options, see the documentation provided for the specific add-in.

How do I know which option to select?

The different options available in this pane enable very different recording behaviors:

UI Element

Description

Record and run test on any open Windows-based application

Instructs UFT One to record all operations performed on any Windows-based application that is opened while recording your test (including e-mail applications and file management applications). UFT One records and runs only on applications that have a user interface, and it does not matter how the applications are opened (as child processes of Windows Explorer or child processes of UFT One).

When selecting this option, make sure that all the applications on which you want to record are currently closed. For some environments, UFT One can recognize and/or record on the applications that you open manually only after you select this option and click OK. Instances of these applications that are already open when the Record and Run Settings dialog box opens may be ignored or may not be recognized or recorded correctly.

Record and run only on

Restricts record and run (and in some cases pointing hand) operations to selected applications. Additionally, you can configure whether UFT One should open these applications for you at the beginning of a record or run session. The following options are available:

  • Applications opened by UFT One. This option records, recognizes, and runs only on applications invoked by UFT One (as child processes of UFT One).

  • Applications opened via the Desktop (by the Windows shell). This option records, recognizes, and runs only on applications that are opened using the Windows Desktop. For example, applications opened from the Windows Start menu, by double-clicking executable files in the Windows Explorer, by double-clicking a shortcut on the Windows Desktop, or by clicking icons on the Quick Launch bar.

  • Applications specified below. This option records, recognizes, and runs only on applications listed in the Application details area.

Tip:

  • If you do not want to record on any Windows-based applications, select only the Applications specified below check box, and ensure that there are no applications listed in the Application details area.
  • Make sure that all the applications listed in the Application details area are currently closed. For some environments, UFT One can record only on the instances of the specified applications that are opened after you select this option and click OK. Instances of these applications that are already open when the Record and Run Settings dialog box opens may be ignored or may not be recognized or recorded correctly.
