Action and compare items related to requests

When items are related to a request, you can action and compare the items in the Visual Studio IDE.

Action items

Action item revisions to move them from their current state to one of the next available lifecycle states.

To action one or more items:

  1. Right-click the Dimensions CM request containing the related items, and select Related. The request opens with the Related tab active.

  2. Select the items to action, right-click, and select Action. The Action Item wizard opens.

  3. On the Select Lifecycle State page, select the lifecycle state to which to action the items, and click Next:

    • To action a single item, select one of the following options:

      Option Details

      Next lifecycle state

      Select this option to action the item to a normal next state. Only valid next states are displayed.
      To specific state Select this option if you want to action the item to any other state. Select a state from the list. You need the necessary privilege to action to one of these states.
    • To action multiple items, select a state from the To specific state list. You need the necessary privilege to action to one of these states.

  4. If you are actioning a single item: On the Modify Item Attributes page, set or change the attributes for an item, and click Next:

    Role (Optional) Select a role to filter the attributes and display only those attributes that are relevant to a specific role.
    Attributes

    The Attributes column displays the user-defined attributes available for the selected role. The attributes depend on the type of item or the item's lifecycle state.

    Attributes in bold are required. Attributes in italics cannot be changed.

    Values Enter attribute values, or select them from the list if applicable.
  5. On the Delegate to Other Users page, delegate the selected items to other users, assign other users a role on the items, or remove previously delegated users, and click Next:

    Role to delegate Select the role that you want to delegate.
    Capability

    Select the capability to assign to the user for this item:

    • Leader: Sole responsibility for the item.
    • Primary: Primary responsibility for the item.
    • Secondary: Acts as a backup to the primary role.
    Assign Assign a user. Select a user in the Available users list and click the Assign button.
    Replace Re-assign a role to a different user. Select a user in the Assigned users list, and a user in the Available users list, and click the Replace button.
    Remove Remove a role assignment from a user. Select a user in the Assigned users list and click the Remove button.
  6. (Optional) On the Add a Comment page, add a comment before you action the items, and click Next.

  7. On the Summary page, review a summary of the actions to be performed on the selected items.

  8. Click Finish.

Compare items

You can compare an item to another item revision, item, or workfile.

To compare items:

  1. Right-click the Dimensions CM request containing the related item and select Related. The request opens with the Related tab active.

  2. Right-click the relevant item and select Compare. The Compare Items dialog box is displayed.

  3. Select what to compare the item with:

    Option Details
    Another revision

    Select a different revision of the item that is related to the request.

    If only one revision is related to the request, this option is not available.

    A workfile

    Select a file to compare with the item. Enter a full path and a file name, or click the browse button to find a file.

    Another item

    Select a different item to compare with the item. Enter the item specification, or click the browse button and select an item from the Select Object list.

    The item specification has the following format:

    productID:itemID.partVariant-itemType;revision

  4. To enable item header substitution, select Expand substitution variables. Header substitution is not supported with optimistic source control.

  5. Click OK. The default merge tool opens where you can compare differences between the items.
