Assign editors and browsers

You can choose the application in which the desktop client opens a particular type of a Dimensions CM request or item for viewing.

Set editor and browser options for requests

By default, the desktop client uses a built-in editor for modifying request descriptions, but you can specify another text editor of your choice. You can also set the default application for viewing requests.

To set the editor and browser options for requests:

  1. In the desktop client, go to Tools > Preferences.

  2. In the Preferences dialog box, select the Editors tab.

  3. In the Category section, select Requests.

  4. Specify the applications for viewing requests and editing request descriptions:

    Field Description
    Browser

By default, the desktop client uses your system's default application to display a request, depending on the request's file format.

Note: By default, requests are displayed as .htm files. The file formats for displaying requests are assigned in the Administration Console. For details, see Assign data formats to object types.

To change the default browser for viewing requests, enter the path to the application or browse to select the application. This application is used when no application has been set for a particular request type.

    Detailed Description Editor

By default, the desktop client uses a built-in editor for action descriptions and detailed descriptions of requests.

To use another editor, enter the path to the application or browse to select the application.

Note: Dimensions CM 14.6 and earlier uses the system's default text application for editing request descriptions. You can revert to this behavior:

    1. Make sure that no editor is selected in the Detailed Description Editor field.

    2. Modify the dm.cfg server configuration file and set the DM_DESCRIPTION_EDITOR symbol to <system>:

      DM_DESCRIPTION_EDITOR <system>

This way, you can edit descriptions using your system's default application for the corresponding file format.

You can also set the DM_DESCRIPTION_EDITOR symbol to a specific editor. For example, to make notepad++.exe your default application for editing request descriptions, set the following:

    DM_DESCRIPTION_EDITOR notepad++.exe

  5. To set a browser or application for a particular request type, select the request type from the Type list. Then in the Editor field, enter the path to the application or browse to select the application.

To go back to using the default browser, click Reset to Defaults.

  6. Click OK.
